Though the book says written  by   J.R   Tolkien his son wrote the 3 most famous ones.But Tolkien receives credit since Tolkien told them to his son for bedtime stories.(he must have had a lot nightmares!).Most of them were not even published during his life time.Almost every thing in the books is explained in the appendix found after book 3 or in the the simerillion though some character like tom bombadil have their own books.The book is chiefly about Hobbit (halflings).The prequel called the hobbit and is about a hobbit named Bilbo and in his adventures finds a magic ring that has the power to turn anyone who wears it invisible and after the adventure the ring begins to take over Bilbo"s mind and also gives him an unnatural life and on his 111 birthday leaves his home leaving the ring to Frodo Bilbo"s adopted heir and after 15 years the wizard Gandalf comes and tells him the ring is the ring of power forged by sauron along with 19 other rings made to be the master ring and sends frodo on a journey to rivendale the elven capital where a Legolis the ranger strider Gimli the dwarf and Boromir join him on his quest to Mt. Doom the only place where the ring and evil   can be destroyed
